Though OpenAI has walked back its statements, its comments amplify how detached AI leaders are from reality.

OpenAI wants U.S. taxpayers to guarantee over $1T in loans (ref). The company’s CFO even laughed off the idea of an IPO; the century-old mechanism for raising capital without public backstops (ref).

A trillion. For private data centers. And no public listing.
If this logic flies, why stop at AI?

If We’re Socializing Risk, Here’s the Queue

  • Space Expansion: Federal guarantees for a $2T Mars build-out: Starship yards, lunar concrete printers, orbital fueling depots. If timelines slip? Taxpayers pick up the check.
  • Quantum Supremacy Fund: $1.5T in loan guarantees so qubit fabs can “move fast and break encryption.” If coherence fails, no problem, Treasury’s your Series Infinity.
  • Global Compute Grid: $800B sovereign backstop to stitch hyperscaler regions into a single “planetary AI utility.” Private profits; public credit risk.
  • Biofoundry Belt: $600B guarantees for CRISPR labs and immortality startups. Because editable humans are “critical infrastructure,” right?
  • Fusion Forever Bonds: $900B backstop for demo reactors, always ten years away.
  • Ocean Terraforming, Inc.: $400B guarantees for carbon-vacuum flotillas. Missed drawdown targets? Extend and pretend.

Once Washington underwrites one private moonshot at national-program scale, every frontier industry will follow. Debt gets cheaper, investors get cushioned, and the downside quietly migrates to taxpayers.

Meanwhile, OpenAI shrugs at an IPO, the one tool that forces transparency, accountability, and shared ownership. Instead, it wants a taxpayer safety net while insiders and venture backers keep the equity, the upside, and can continue to fund their lavish lifestyles.

This is the new playbook for the wealth divide:
Privatize the gains, nationalize the risk.

For context:

  • The 2008 bank bailout that stabilized the entire financial system was about $700B.
  • The Apollo program that put humanity on the Moon? Roughly $250B in today’s dollars.
  • OpenAI wants more than both combined for server racks.

At some point, the line between innovation and entitlement snaps. If you can laugh off an IPO while asking taxpayers to back a trillion-dollar bet, you’re not building the future, you’re mortgaging it.
